Fastest Way To Get An Emergency Canadian Passport On A Weekend Or Holiday
Have you ever wondered whether it would be possible to get a Canadian passport on very short notice over a weekend or a holiday?
The answer is that it is completely possible, it’s just more expensive. If you ever need to know how to get a passport for a spontaneous last minute trip or an emergency, here’s some important info for obtaining your passport as quickly as possible.
Emergency Passports Require Proof of Travel
It is possible to obtain express passport services at some locations throughout Canada. In order to qualify for these services, you will need to apply in person and provide proof of travel.
In other words, they will want you to show evidence of your dates of travel in order to prove that your situation is urgent. This could include a plane, bus or train ticket or a travel itinerary that shows proof of payment and dates of travel.
How Much Does it Cost?
For an “Urgent” passport, which will be ready at the end of the next business day, it will cost $110 CAD. If you opt for the “Express Service” your Canadian passport will be ready for pick up within 2-9 business days and will cost an additional $50 CAD.
This cost is on top of the regular passport fee, as it simply covers the urgent or express priority service. This means that leaving your passport to the last minute is pricey, so try to always check that your passport is still valid before booking any travel.
What About on a Weekend or Holiday?
What should you do if you require a Canadian passport on a weekend or over a statutory holiday? What you will need to do is call 1-800-567-6868. This service can only be used in emergencies when imminent travel over the weekend is absolutely critical. You will be connected with an employee who will give you a step by step guide on what to do.
You will need to have all of your required documents, including your proof of travel, your passport photos and your application form. Make sure that you have everything that the passport office asks for – if you have any documentation missing, you may not be able to get your passport.
The extra cost will be $335 for issuing a Canadian passport on a weekend or statutory holiday, in addition to the standard passport fee. If you are getting passports for multiple members of your family you will only be charged the extra $335 fee once. Any additional passports for your other family members will be charged a fee of $110 for urgent pickup.
Remember, you must show up to the passport office in person when you are applying for these urgent services. If you send someone in your place, you will not be able to get a passport.
Getting a passport at the last minute on a weekend or holiday will be a lot more expensive than getting a passport in advance, but if you are in a pinch it is definitely possible. To start your application, visit the official Government of Canada website today.
